2006 Round 3 - Fourths vs Caulfield Grammar

Author: Cliff Dragon

Score: 2 - 3
Goal Scorers: Wison Le, Brett Watson

In what was reported as the coldest day this year, we played our 3rd game away to Caulfield Grammer. We started off being awarded a penalty in the 1st minute but unfortunately with the keeper going the wrong way, our captain for the day Ben M hit the post!! As usual we started the game well and dominated possession and play but couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

Midway through the 1st half, Caulfield were awarded a corner and Tom our keeper saved an attempted header at goal but couldn’t hold on to it and the rebound was slotted in by a Caulfield player. Then in a defensive lapse, we conceded another soft goal and were 2 nil done by half time. It was the 1st time that we have gone behind and it was a real test of the boys mental strength and team spirit.

In the 2nd half, several changes were made with Garo playing on the right of defence, James B replacing Ben R in central defence, Aleco plaing on the left side of defence, Brett W on the left wing and myself coming on for James C upfront. The substitutes made a major impact on the game and the whole team worked really hard and were rewarded by scoring a goal compliments from Wison who finished up a good move that was worked from our defence, right through to the midfield that led to him going one on one situation with the goalkeeper.

That goal really spurred the boys on and it changed the complex of the game. All 50-50 balls were challenged very strongly and despite our boys being physically outplayed in the 1st half, we came back hard after that goal and everyone on the ground could sense another goal coming from us.

Unfortunately in committing players forward in search for the equaliser, we were caught out and conceded a 3rd goal. Despite that goal, our boys continued to rally on and Brett W capped off his debut for the 4ths with our 2nd goal. It was good positioning by Brett W and resulted in a play that was actually worked on in training so well done Brett. In fact, Brett performed really well on the left side of midfield causing all sorts of problems. Defensively he was solid as well. Both Wison and him played well for us on the wings and we will continue with our system of play with certain areas to be worked on.

Looking forward, despite the loss (our 1st for the season), the team spirit is really strong and everyone plays for each other. It is a very encouraging sign and the future looks good for the team.
